00:00:39.709 --> 00:00:50.954
Now let's get the important technicalities out of the way when it comes to this trial and then we'll discuss yesterday's development in the Supreme Court of Victoria at Morwell.

00:00:50.954 --> 00:01:03.405
Ms Erin Trudy Patterson, age 50, from Leongatha, is pleading not guilty to three charges of murder and one of attempted murder.

00:01:03.405 --> 00:01:20.566
She's accused but denies deliberately serving a meal containing death cat mushrooms to her former in-laws and their relatives during a lunch at her home in Leongatha on July 29, 2023.

00:01:20.566 --> 00:01:29.016
Don and Gail Patterson, both aged 70, and Gail's sister, Heather Wilkinson, aged 66, later died.

00:01:29.016 --> 00:01:43.954
Heather's husband, Ian Wilkinson, became critically ill but survived, and there was an episode of his testimony, probably one or two episodes back, so you can listen to that too.

00:01:43.954 --> 00:02:08.335
On the seventh day of Erin Patterson's murder trial, the jury heard the following On July 31, just two days after the fatal lunch, Ms Patterson arrived at Leongatha Urgent Care and she left after only five minutes against medical advice.

00:02:08.675 --> 00:02:19.683
The jury listened to a triple O call, or an emergency call, made by Dr Chris Webster, who contacted police with concerns about her well-being after she left.

00:02:19.683 --> 00:02:28.022
When she returned to the hospital later that morning, Dr Webster emphasised the need for her to test her two children.

00:02:28.022 --> 00:02:38.810
Ms Patterson had claimed they had eaten leftover beef but it did not contain mushrooms because they didn't like them, According to the testimony.

00:02:38.810 --> 00:02:47.336
When she said her children might be frightened, Dr Webster responded they can be scared and alive or dead.

00:02:47.336 --> 00:03:06.174
At approximately 10.30am on July 31, Erin told her brother-in-law, Matthew Peterson sorry, Matthew Patterson during a phone call that the mushrooms used in the beef had come from a Woolworths supermarket and an Asian grocery store.

00:03:06.174 --> 00:03:11.913
Dr Chris Webster also said Ms Patterson had told him they were from Woolworths.

00:03:11.913 --> 00:03:20.540
The jury also saw a written statement by Danielle Romaine, a representative from the state health department.

00:03:20.540 --> 00:03:36.597
She confirmed a search of the state's cancer registry revealed no record of Erin Patterson ever having been diagnosed with cancer, despite the fact she told the lunch attendees she had that disease.

00:03:36.597 --> 00:03:52.733
Don and Gail Patterson testified that her mother told her the lunch at Erin's home had gone quote well, when they spoke over the phone at around 5pm on the day of the mushroom lunch.

00:03:52.752 --> 00:04:01.435
Back to the hospital, Dr Veronica Foote, a procedural general practitioner, also gave evidence in the trial.

00:04:01.435 --> 00:04:06.252
She was working a 24-hour shift at the Leangatha Hospital.

00:04:06.252 --> 00:04:23.971
The doctor told the court she began her shift at 8am on July 31 when fellow doctor, Chris Webster, informed her that two patients, that was, Ian and Heather, were being treated for suspected mushroom poisoning.

00:04:23.971 --> 00:04:36.403
Shortly after the hospital's director of nursing, Kylie Ashton, informed Dr Foote that Erin Patterson had arrived at the hospital at approximately 8.05am.

00:04:36.403 --> 00:04:46.975
Nurse Ashton had asked Erin to enter a cubicle for a medical assessment, but she had declined, according to Dr Foote's testimony.

00:04:46.975 --> 00:04:51.725
Ashton then requested the doctor speak with Erin directly.

00:04:51.725 --> 00:04:58.944
The doctor recalled encountering Erin near the entrance to the urgent care clinic.

00:04:58.944 --> 00:05:01.449
She was on her way out, Foote said.

00:05:01.449 --> 00:05:08.827
The doctor testified that she expressed concerns about Erin's condition and advised her to remain at the hospital.

00:05:08.827 --> 00:05:21.382
I spoke to Ms Patterson and relayed our concerns for her health and the potential she could become very unwell and that was our medical advice that she stayed.

00:05:21.382 --> 00:05:22.723
She told the court.

00:05:22.723 --> 00:05:32.533
Erin responded saying she couldn't, that she needed to make arrangements for her animals and her children, but added she would return later.

00:05:34.079 --> 00:05:40.254
In a two-minute video time stamped at 9.55am, but actually at 8.10am.

00:05:40.254 --> 00:05:49.915
It showed Ms Patterson dressed in a pink jumper, white pants and black sandals, and wearing both a black handbag and a black backpack.

00:05:49.915 --> 00:05:52.848
She also had a face mask on.

00:05:52.848 --> 00:06:01.714
In the footage, Erin is seen near the hospital entrance speaking to the two staff members, Dr Foote and Nurse Ashton.

00:06:01.714 --> 00:06:05.826
The nurse hands her a document which Erin signs.

00:06:05.826 --> 00:06:12.408
According to Dr Foote, the form confirmed that Erin was leaving the hospital against medical advice.

00:06:12.408 --> 00:06:18.612
She told the court that Ms Patterson had informed staff she'd return within 30 minutes.

00:06:18.612 --> 00:06:26.269
However, it was revealed that she did not come back, as stated until later.

00:06:27.531 --> 00:06:30.382
And that's all I have for you today, Until next time.
