Also, I'm going to be sending through the photos that relate to this episode on the newsletter tomorrow, so get ready.
00:00:32.533 --> 00:00:40.883
So today we're going to talk about Simon Patterson, the survivor father, and his life on the beaten track.
00:00:40.883 --> 00:00:51.347
For someone so central to this most bizarre and tragic case in recent Australian history, simon Patterson has remained remarkably private.
00:00:51.347 --> 00:00:52.649
Do you blame him?
00:00:52.649 --> 00:00:53.331
I don't.
00:00:53.331 --> 00:01:07.555
He's Aaron's estranged husband, the man who was meant to be at that infamous lunch that killed his mother and father and his aunt, but Simon didn't attend.
00:01:07.555 --> 00:01:27.882
While much of the focus has been on Erin, I want to take a moment to look at Simon, the man behind the headlines, because if you dig a little deeper, you'll find someone who, long before the courtrooms and media frenzy, had a deep love of remote travel, family time and the Australian outback.
00:01:27.882 --> 00:01:33.822
John Ferguson, from the Australian, had yesterday an excellent article in the Oz about Simon.
00:01:33.822 --> 00:01:43.287
I won't go into too much detail here today because John's going to be on our show, hopefully this week if I can get hold of the studio.
00:01:43.287 --> 00:01:48.804
But moving on, this is how John's article in the Oz started.
00:01:48.804 --> 00:01:55.402
Quote Simon Patterson lost a lot when he married the woman who was a stranger to the truth.
00:01:55.402 --> 00:02:05.331
Erin Patterson could be aggressive, nasty, vindictive, manipulative and lazy oh my God, she would hate that, can you imagine.
00:02:05.331 --> 00:02:09.181
But she was also the ultimate contradiction.
00:02:09.181 --> 00:02:14.581
If you believe the evidence, she could be a good mother, generous at times and bright.
00:02:14.581 --> 00:02:16.026
The Supreme Court heard.
00:02:16.026 --> 00:02:24.927
But how can a killer whose legacy is grief across two families and two communities ever be anything but bad?
00:02:24.927 --> 00:02:27.152
You'll have to excuse me now.
00:02:27.152 --> 00:02:30.870
It's absolutely pelting rain at the moment.
00:02:30.870 --> 00:02:34.322
I will try and get rid of most of it, but you'll have to forgive me.
00:02:34.322 --> 00:02:49.366
Those hardest hit by the murders, the Pattersons and the Wilkinsons, are in the midst of a very difficult recovery process, with experts warning that the post-verdict environment poses unique challenges for anyone.
00:02:50.147 --> 00:03:03.385
To some of his friends, simon was a victim of sustained domestic violence from a nasty and unpredictable wife who manipulated situations and the children to maintain power over him.
00:03:03.385 --> 00:03:08.736
Quote Simon is a very good person, says one friend.
00:03:08.736 --> 00:03:10.824
He is decent and warm.
00:03:10.824 --> 00:03:28.316
But Erin, this is not John's article anymore, this is me, but Erin loved to spin a tale in the Facebook group about the man who she originally called Hubby, even though this was 2019 and they had originally split in 2015.
00:03:28.316 --> 00:03:32.847
Hubby that implies to me connection and regard.
00:03:32.847 --> 00:03:35.111
I don't know what she was up to there.
00:03:35.111 --> 00:03:37.024
Maybe it was perception management.
00:03:37.024 --> 00:03:45.888
Others from the group told me later that Patterson had a very unhappy marriage and she alleged quote coercive control.
00:03:45.888 --> 00:03:51.109
Looks like someone was giving herself away unintentionally there.
00:03:51.109 --> 00:04:04.191
In my opinion, to date we don't know a lot about Simon because he's chosen to stay silent, which is his choice, and no one would ever blame him for that but a few things have flown under the radar.
00:04:04.973 --> 00:04:11.012
He was a keen photographer who loved to travel to places such as China, iran and Africa.
00:04:11.012 --> 00:04:31.288
Now his photo blog was deleted, but I'm fortunate that I saved on my iCloud a few things that he had put out publicly, such as photos from China of his dad, don, frozen in time outside a refreshment stand where they made their way to the top of the world.
00:04:31.288 --> 00:04:32.732
And this is what he said.
00:04:32.732 --> 00:04:44.814
I've just come back from a trip to China, an amazing country with probably an extreme and a highly photogenic example of about every natural phenomenon there is.
00:04:44.814 --> 00:04:50.831
My favourite China experience was Mount Everest, beautifully moonlit at night.
00:04:50.831 --> 00:04:56.507
Standing at the foot of the world's highest mountain is simply incredible.
00:04:56.507 --> 00:05:01.079
I stood transfixed for about five hours and I couldn't drink it all.
00:05:01.079 --> 00:05:04.708
In Quote where would you like to go next?
00:05:04.708 --> 00:05:11.548
He says the Silk Road from far Western China to Turkey would be an amazing journey.
00:05:12.088 --> 00:05:29.396
In a blog post titled Australian Outback Adventures the Anne Beadle Highway, simon wrote about taking his family on a 1,350-kilometre journey across some of the most isolated desert highways in Australia.
00:05:29.396 --> 00:05:35.713
He described now, if you're on YouTube, I put a photo up of a campsite with stars.
00:05:35.713 --> 00:05:38.528
That's Simon and Erin and their young son.
00:05:38.528 --> 00:05:51.017
He described the experience of camping under the Milky Way, far from civilisation, pitching tents near an old nuclear test site, though carefully avoiding the radioactive zones.
00:05:51.017 --> 00:05:52.201
Here's a quote.
00:05:52.201 --> 00:05:57.923
There's nothing like the peace and tranquillity hundreds of miles from civilisation.
00:05:57.923 --> 00:06:06.641
It's a real privilege to safely pitch a tent with one's family and enjoy a simple campfire meal in the crisp, clean air.
00:06:06.641 --> 00:06:16.795
Moreover, he said they were on a corrugated sandy track through the Australian desert and they were moving a corrugated sandy track through the Australian desert and they were moving home across Australia.
00:06:16.795 --> 00:06:19.403
So that's obviously when they're coming back from Perth.
00:06:19.403 --> 00:06:35.812
So maybe we're talking 2013, especially when it's a four-year-old child traveling with his dad, even more so when the route goes past old nuclear bomb sites, which continue as an active military testing range to this day.
00:06:36.353 --> 00:06:37.937
I'll put this in the newsletter as well.
00:06:37.937 --> 00:06:47.112
It's quite jarring to see photos of their campsite, their grey four-wheel drive's in the background, and there's three camp chairs set up outside a tent.
00:06:47.112 --> 00:06:49.776
One is a tiny child's seat.
00:06:49.776 --> 00:06:55.333
And then Simon writes about playing cricket several times a day with their four-year-old son.
00:06:55.333 --> 00:07:03.800
This is a man, at least at that time, who found value in simplicity, in unplugging, in watching the stars with his family.
00:07:03.800 --> 00:07:09.495
It's an image that's hard to reconcile with the horror that would unfold years later.
00:07:09.696 --> 00:07:15.024
Ports describes Simon as a quite decent man who is deeply religious.
00:07:15.024 --> 00:07:27.778
He's respected in his Gippsland community and someone who, after separating from Erin in 2015, tried to maintain civility for the sake of their two children.
00:07:27.778 --> 00:07:30.141
And yet there were questions.
00:07:30.141 --> 00:07:35.273
He'd been hospitalised in 2022 with a mysterious stomach illness.
00:07:35.273 --> 00:07:42.536
He wrote in a since-deleted Facebook post that he'd nearly died and had to be revived many times.
00:07:42.536 --> 00:07:43.499
In court.
00:07:43.559 --> 00:07:45.502
Salmon became a crucial witness.
00:07:45.502 --> 00:07:49.983
He spoke with visible emotion about his parents and their faith.
00:07:49.983 --> 00:07:53.244
He confirmed that he'd fully cooperated with the police handing over his devices and their faith.
00:07:53.244 --> 00:07:57.257
He confirmed that he'd fully cooperated with the police handing over his devices and assisting the investigation.
00:07:57.257 --> 00:08:08.112
Simon never asked to be at the centre of this story, but here he is a father, a son and a survivor, not just of a toxic lunch but of the fallout that followed.
00:08:08.112 --> 00:08:09.593
Now it's interesting.
00:08:09.713 --> 00:08:18.165
In one of the photo blogs Simon's mentioned in, he describes himself as discovering the truth of things Interesting.
00:08:18.165 --> 00:08:27.740
He is a very enthusiastic amateur photographer and he wrote about being a volunteer photographer for a small-town community magazine.
00:08:27.740 --> 00:08:33.539
That might have been the one that Erin coordinated, and so did Don and Gail Patterson, his parents.
00:08:33.539 --> 00:08:37.619
He was asked to shoot a newly repurposed meeting room.
00:08:37.619 --> 00:08:44.562
The challenge the room was formerly a public toilet, making it a less than ideal subject.
00:08:44.562 --> 00:08:50.143
The task came with a tight deadline, just days after he returned from overseas.
00:08:51.371 --> 00:08:55.772
He also writes about Namibia, days after he returned from overseas.
00:08:55.772 --> 00:08:56.594
He also writes about Namibia.
00:08:56.594 --> 00:08:59.883
He describes Namibia in Africa as a great place for self-driving and camping, with safe, comfortable accommodation.
00:08:59.883 --> 00:09:06.383
English and German are the common languages and there's affordable food and fuel.
00:09:06.383 --> 00:09:16.033
Now Simon has a photo here of a self-contained setup with two rooftop tents on their four-wheel drive that they hired in Namibia.
00:09:16.033 --> 00:09:21.774
He said it was a good way to travel, and they've got bamboo ladders that lead to the tents.
00:09:22.176 --> 00:09:23.519
I've just got to say something.
00:09:23.519 --> 00:09:32.133
I would take my chances with the wildlife rather than camping with Erin Patterson in Namibia, just saying Because she's her own type.
00:09:32.133 --> 00:09:34.850
She's a predator at the end of the day.
00:09:34.850 --> 00:09:45.904
So it was a really good place for them to self-drive and camp, and there were supermarkets everywhere and they're full of food for a westerner's palate.
00:09:45.904 --> 00:09:48.731
Accommodation was safe and comfortable.
00:09:48.731 --> 00:10:03.091
Simon also mentions that they got a four-wheel drive that had a missing wheel nut, and they had to drive on the flat, lonely desert road in Namibia and attach a spare tire as best they could.
00:10:03.091 --> 00:10:09.230
So they drove for a fortnight through Africa with one wheel not entirely attached to the car.
00:10:09.230 --> 00:10:17.957
The wheel never fell off, though, so we learnt in Namibia that attaching wheels via all six nuts is perhaps overrated.
00:10:17.957 --> 00:10:20.363
So thank you for listening.
00:10:20.363 --> 00:10:22.491
