00:00:00.620 --> 00:00:02.926
This is the Mushroom Murder Trial Podcast.

00:00:02.926 --> 00:00:05.652
My name is Lisa and welcome to my show.

00:00:05.652 --> 00:00:06.820
And what a day.

00:00:06.820 --> 00:00:17.492
It's certainly visiting today because after a mammoth 10 weeks, a jury in Victoria returned guilty verdicts against the woman now known as the Mushroom Killer.

00:00:17.492 --> 00:00:30.689
Erin Trudy Patterson, age 50, of Landgather was found guilty of three counts of murder and one count of attempted murder after a 2023 lunch at her home.

00:00:30.689 --> 00:00:43.981
The mum of two had also faced charges of repeatedly attempting to murder her estranged husband, simon Patterson, but the allegations were discontinued at the start of this murder trial.

00:00:43.981 --> 00:00:48.953
Miss Patterson now found guilty of intentionally poisoning her lunch.

00:00:48.953 --> 00:00:59.313
Guests served them a beef wellington meal that contained death cap mushrooms at her Gippsland home in July 2023.

00:00:59.313 --> 00:01:05.352
Her former in-laws, don and Gail Patterson, and Gail's sister, heather, all died.

00:01:05.352 --> 00:01:10.212
Heather's husband, ian Wilkinson, spent two months in hospital recovering.

00:01:10.212 --> 00:01:17.493
He gave evidence at the trial and spent most days at the La Trobe law courts listening to the testimony.

00:01:17.493 --> 00:01:23.653
During the Supreme Court trial at Morwell, the jury heard from a range of forensic experts.

00:01:23.653 --> 00:01:30.147
Orwell, the jury heard from a range of forensic experts, medical people who treated those who became ill, as well as relatives of the deceased.

00:01:30.147 --> 00:01:34.942
As today's verdict reverberated across the courtroom, I was told.

00:01:34.942 --> 00:01:43.346
Patterson did not react, staring intently at the jury as it read out its final conclusions on the four charges.

00:01:43.346 --> 00:01:54.251
After six days of deliberations, the jury of seven men and five women returned guilty verdicts in a long trial with many exhibits.

00:01:54.251 --> 00:02:08.824
During the 10 weeks of hearings and deliberation, the jury heard Patterson was aggressive towards her in-laws after the separation from her estranged husband, simon turned nasty in late 2022.

00:02:08.824 --> 00:02:18.712
During the Supreme Court trial, the jury heard from experts and medical specialists who treated those who became ill as well.

00:02:18.712 --> 00:02:26.300
Relatives of the deceased testified, including Simon Patterson and other members of the Patterson and Wilkinson families.

00:02:26.300 --> 00:02:35.026
Outside the court, more than 200 people milled as a massive media scrum moved in on lawyers, police and friends of those involved.

00:02:35.026 --> 00:02:45.834
Patterson's close friend, alison Rose Pryor, negotiated her way through the media and spoke briefly to say she would visit Miss Patterson in the future.

00:02:45.834 --> 00:02:54.313
Okay, so I suppose now I can say I know Erin and I know Ali Rose Pryor from that Facebook group.

00:02:54.313 --> 00:02:55.461
There you go.

00:02:55.461 --> 00:02:58.930
I'm not sure how much more I can say until she's sentenced.

00:02:58.930 --> 00:02:59.932
We shall see.

00:03:00.759 --> 00:03:10.254
Now, seven News reporter Estelle Greer-Pink provided some insight today into what was expected to happen to Miss Patterson now she's been found guilty.

00:03:10.254 --> 00:03:12.943
She said quote because she's been found guilty.

00:03:12.943 --> 00:03:21.598
She's been taken from her custody box in the court through what we believe is a lift into a tunnel that connects to the police station.

00:03:21.598 --> 00:03:27.192
She said quote She'll be put in that prison van and she'll travel to Dame Phyllis Frost.

00:03:27.192 --> 00:03:38.872
That's a maximum security women's prison in Melbourne they're my words, not hers and there we are unlikely to see her again until about August.

00:03:38.872 --> 00:03:42.050
That's when her next court hearing has been scheduled.

00:03:42.050 --> 00:03:55.508
Now she will presumably stay in Dame Phyllis Frost until the sentencing and the former air traffic controller now faces up to life in prison house.

00:03:55.508 --> 00:04:16.473
Some of Australia's most infamous female offenders, including teen killer Carolyn Reed Robertson, gangland widow Roberta Williams and German drug smuggler Andrea Moore.

00:04:16.473 --> 00:04:33.283
Other high profile inmates Patterson will be bunking down with may include the black widow Robin Lindholm, widow Robin Lindholm, melbourne underworld queen Judy Moran and serial con artist Samantha.

00:04:33.302 --> 00:04:40.735
As a party Since 2023, patterson has been placed in a protected unit for her own safety.

00:04:40.735 --> 00:04:49.300
Now this reminds me of something I just saw the most incredible thing on the Herald Sun, and I'm going to share it with you.

00:04:49.300 --> 00:04:57.502
So it's a story by Brooke Crevett, craig and Anthony Dowsley, and it says hold on to your seat, get ready.

00:04:57.502 --> 00:05:03.494
Aaron Patterson accused by another inmate of tampering with prison food.

00:05:03.494 --> 00:05:18.988
Now this came out today, the 7th of July, and it says triple murderer Erin Patterson was accused of tampering with prison food that made another inmate sick while waiting for her high-profile trial to begin.

00:05:18.988 --> 00:05:29.827
The allegation was made by a fellow inmate who was held in the same unit as Patterson at a maximum security prison, danefellis Frost Centre in Melbourne.

00:05:30.300 --> 00:05:37.990
Patterson was thrown behind bars in November 2023 and was charged with murdering her estranged husband's family.

00:05:37.990 --> 00:05:39.093
So we know those bits.

00:05:39.093 --> 00:05:51.223
Sources said the mushroom cook had fallen out with other inmates last year before at least one prisoner fell sick when they ate a meal that was prepared in the unit.

00:05:51.223 --> 00:05:53.507
Oh my God.

00:05:53.507 --> 00:06:00.541
The mother of two was then transferred into a hard lockdown area known as the slot.

00:06:00.541 --> 00:06:11.468
While officers probed the claim in the slot, inmates were placed in solitary confinement for more than 22 hours a day with little human contact.

00:06:11.468 --> 00:06:12.632
It's understood.

00:06:12.632 --> 00:06:18.427
The complaint about Patterson was investigated, but no known further action was taken.

00:06:18.427 --> 00:06:22.213
Patterson's camp said the allegation was baseless.

00:06:22.213 --> 00:06:30.944
The Herald Sun was prevented from reporting the alleged incident when she was awaiting her trial interesting, isn't it?

00:06:30.944 --> 00:06:33.168
But she denies it.

00:06:33.168 --> 00:06:45.848
The article goes on to say another source said patterson had acted completely entitled while she was on remand at dame phyllis frost center quote all the girls have issues with each other in there.

00:06:45.848 --> 00:06:57.783
This person said the unit Erin was housed in was almost like a melting pot of tension, as they are confined to the middle of the jail and have to be escorted anywhere they go.

00:06:57.783 --> 00:06:59.466
Interesting.

00:07:00.408 --> 00:07:02.612
So thank you so much for listening.

00:07:02.612 --> 00:07:22.884
Today I'm going to be doing many podcasts, so this is just episode one of season two, but I'll be putting information on my website, mushroommurdertrialcom, and please subscribe to this podcast, the Mushroom Murder Trial podcast, on your preferred platform so you never miss an episode.

00:07:22.884 --> 00:07:27.276
And also, if you could, I would really appreciate it if you could review it.

00:07:27.276 --> 00:07:37.273
My social media details are also in the show notes if you want to connect with me there and if you feel like rewarding me for the thousands of hours I've spent on this work.

00:07:37.774 --> 00:07:51.127
I have a Buy Me A Coffee membership and that's linked below as well, but I have a whole lot of material that I pre-recorded before the trial and now we're at a point where I can release some of it.

00:07:51.127 --> 00:07:51.829
So get ready.

00:07:51.829 --> 00:07:55.189
And what an interesting day today was.

00:07:55.189 --> 00:08:09.379
I thought it might be today just because maybe they wanted to go back in the jury room and just go over everything one last time, but certainly we owe our thanks to the jurors doing their bit for Australia and the legal system.

00:08:09.379 --> 00:08:14.947
So have a wonderful rest of the day and I shall speak to you very, very soon.

00:08:14.947 --> 00:08:16.810
Bye, thank you.
