00:00:49.343 --> 00:00:56.881
Now, today we had more of the mushroom cook's testimony, and it was about the lunch and about the lies.
00:00:56.881 --> 00:01:04.996
And even though the accused, erin Trudy Patterson, is the final witness, we still have a few weeks to go.
00:01:04.996 --> 00:01:09.144
I can't say when it will end, but we might know more tomorrow.
00:01:09.144 --> 00:01:15.269
Meanwhile, I've been sitting through every hearing over the past six weeks and I've barely left home.
00:01:15.269 --> 00:01:22.849
So I'm starting to feel and look a little like Bridget Jones when she was stuck in a Thai prison, but moving along.
00:01:22.849 --> 00:01:24.853
Enough about my complaining.
00:01:24.853 --> 00:01:27.201
Stuck in a Thai prison, but moving along.
00:01:27.201 --> 00:01:27.763
Enough about my complaining.
00:01:27.763 --> 00:01:28.745
I need to tell you what happened today.
00:01:28.765 --> 00:01:35.963
We heard again from Ms Patterson about the lunch before the lunch, so that was on June 24, 2023.
00:01:35.963 --> 00:01:45.572
It was a meal of shepherd's pie and it was hosted at her Leangatha home with Don and Gail Patterson attending and her children.
00:01:45.572 --> 00:01:49.846
She had also invited her ex-husband, simon, to the gathering.
00:01:49.846 --> 00:02:19.820
The 50-year-old told the Supreme Court of Victoria at Morwell she had grown concerned that there may have been some distancing between her and the Patterson family, noting that in the past Simon would usually mention family events, but Miss Patterson said there had recently been one or two gatherings she was not invited to, so in about May or June she decided to make more of an effort to reconnect, hence the lunch on June 24.
00:02:19.820 --> 00:02:28.935
Erin described Don and Gail's relationship with their grandchildren as strong and she said the children enjoyed spending time with them.
00:02:29.680 --> 00:02:35.073
Later, the court referred to a text message from Gail about a medical appointment.
00:02:35.073 --> 00:02:40.793
Erin said she may have mentioned the appointment to Gail before or during the lunch.
00:02:40.793 --> 00:02:52.993
At the time she told the older woman she had a lump in her arm, had undergone a needle biopsy and would be returning for an MRI the following week.
00:02:52.993 --> 00:02:56.866
However, she confirmed to the court that this was not true.
00:02:56.866 --> 00:03:01.179
There had been no biopsy and no MRI that was scheduled.
00:03:01.179 --> 00:03:03.984
She admitted to fabricating the story.
00:03:03.984 --> 00:03:13.376
Ms Patterson explained that some weeks earlier she had experienced pain in her elbow and the Pattersons had shown her care and concern.
00:03:13.376 --> 00:03:20.377
She found that support comforting and acknowledged that this influenced her decision to continue the deception.
00:03:20.377 --> 00:03:23.484
She said she did not want their care to stop.
00:03:23.484 --> 00:03:32.283
On July 6, she falsely told Gail via SMS that there was a quote a bit to digest from the MRI.
00:03:32.283 --> 00:03:39.387
In reality she had been considering gastric bypass surgery but had chosen not to disclose this.
00:03:39.387 --> 00:03:49.336
She stated she may have let the family believe the situation was more serious in order to get secure assistance with the children during her recovery.
00:03:49.858 --> 00:03:58.425
Ms Patterson told the court her mother had always made beef Wellington as a special occasion recipe when she was a child.
00:03:58.425 --> 00:04:06.231
So after a lot of consideration she chose that dish for the July 29 lunch Quote.
00:04:06.231 --> 00:04:11.256
It was in my recipe book Recipe, tin Eats I think that's where I found it.
00:04:11.256 --> 00:04:17.202
Initially she said Ms Patterson bought the majority of the ingredients from Woolworths in Leangatha.
00:04:17.202 --> 00:04:21.637
She said she may have also got some ingredients at the IGA or Aldi.
00:04:21.637 --> 00:04:33.613
Her barrister, colin Mandy SC, asked if she'd followed the recipe for Beef Wellington in the Recipe Tin Eats cookbook followed the recipe for Beef Wellington in the recipe tin eats cookbook.
00:04:33.613 --> 00:04:35.778
She said quote roughly but says she made some quote deviations.
00:04:35.778 --> 00:04:44.336
Miss Patterson said she could not buy a single beef tenderloin so she bought individual eye fillet steaks instead.
00:04:45.658 --> 00:05:01.319
On the morning of July 29, she began preparing the mushroom mince paste, frying garlic and shallots before chopping the mushrooms in a thermomix and cooking them to reduce the moisture so your pastry doesn't get soggy.
00:05:01.319 --> 00:05:13.954
She began cooking with the aim to serve the meal at 12.30pm and made six individual beef Wellington portions 30pm and made six individual Beef Wellington portions.
00:05:13.954 --> 00:05:15.377
Miss Patterson said she accepted the Beef Wellington she served.
00:05:15.377 --> 00:05:17.002
Her lunch guests contained death cat mushrooms.
00:05:17.002 --> 00:05:23.281
She had primarily used mushrooms from Woolworths and an Asian stall.
00:05:23.281 --> 00:05:29.237
But Miss Patterson said the mince paste tasted a little bit bland.
00:05:29.237 --> 00:05:46.882
I tasted it a few times and it seemed bland to me so I decided to put the dried mushrooms from in the pantry, she said At the time I believe it was just mushrooms I got from the grocer in Melbourne but now I think there was a possibility there were foraged ones in there as well.
00:05:46.882 --> 00:05:58.649
She noticed that the Pattersons had been holding quarterly family gatherings to celebrate birthdays and Gail had, on that day, invited her to the next one.
00:05:58.649 --> 00:06:01.093
She was pleased to agree to attend.
00:06:01.834 --> 00:06:09.841
Ms Patterson said she used her normal dinner plates and stated that she did not own grey plates.
00:06:09.841 --> 00:06:18.541
As well as this, she did not finish her portion of food at the Beef Wellington lunch, mainly because she was talking a lot.
00:06:18.541 --> 00:06:25.752
She said after the guests left she ate two-thirds of an orange cake that Gail Patterson had brought over to the lunch.
00:06:25.752 --> 00:06:30.826
After eating the cake she fell ill, she said, and threw up the food.
00:06:30.826 --> 00:06:35.500
The jury was told that she had a history of disordered eating.
00:06:36.182 --> 00:06:41.759
Ms Patterson said she planned for the gastric bypass surgery but was embarrassed to tell anyone.
00:06:41.759 --> 00:06:52.593
She told the court she instead lied to her guests about having ovarian cancer so she wouldn't have to reveal the weight loss surgery and they could help her with logistics.
00:06:52.593 --> 00:06:54.918
Around the kids, she said Quote.
00:06:54.918 --> 00:06:56.543
They showed a lot of compassion.
00:06:56.543 --> 00:06:58.892
Why don't we pray for Erin?
00:06:58.892 --> 00:07:01.557
And I lied to them, quote.
00:07:01.557 --> 00:07:04.744
I was really embarrassed, ashamed.
00:07:04.744 --> 00:07:08.017
I didn't have control over my body or what I ate.
00:07:08.017 --> 00:07:10.124
I shouldn't have lied.
00:07:10.124 --> 00:07:16.541
Now we will continue tomorrow reporting on this in a special bonus episode.
00:07:16.541 --> 00:07:25.567
But just keep in mind Ms Patterson is fighting three counts of murder and one count of attempted murder, but she's pleading not guilty.
00:07:25.567 --> 00:07:27.733
