Ms Patterson, a community newsletter editor, denies any wrongdoing and we are not suggesting she intentionally poisoned her relatives. 

In a written statement sent to Victoria Police last year and obtained exclusively by the ABC – the South Gippsland woman has given her first detailed account of what transpired before and after the fatal lunch.

"I am now wanting to clear up the record because I have become extremely stressed and overwhelmed by the deaths of my loved ones," Ms Patterson said.

"I am hoping this statement might help in some way. I believe if people understood the background more, they would not be so quick to rush to judgement.

"I am now devastated to think that these mushrooms may have contributed to the illness suffered by my loved ones. I really want to repeat that I had absolutely no reason to hurt these people whom I loved."

The Timeline 

  • July 29, 2023 : Her former in-laws Don and Gail Patterson, as well as extended family Heather and Ian Wilkinson, were guests. Shortly afterwards, the four guests fell ill and were taken to hospital
  • August 4: Heather Wilkinson and Gail Patterson pass away in hospital
  • August 5: Don Patterson passes away in hospital

Because amidst the beauty of the forest floor lies a hidden danger that can prove deadly: poisonous mushrooms.

While some varieties of wild mushrooms are prized for their culinary delights, others harbor toxins that can lead to severe illness and death if ingested.

Understanding how these fungi can kill is essential for anyone venturing into the realm of wild mushroom foraging.

1. Lethal Toxicity: Certain species of wild mushrooms contain potent toxins that can have devastating effects on the human body. These toxins can attack vital organs such as the liver and kidneys, leading to organ failure and death if left untreated. Examples of deadly mushrooms include the death cap (Amanita phalloides), the destroying angel (Amanita bisporigera), and the deadly galerina (Galerina marginata), all of which contain toxins that can be fatal even in small doses.

2. Misidentification: One of the greatest risks associated with wild mushroom foraging is the possibility of misidentifying toxic species as edible ones. Many poisonous mushrooms closely resemble their edible counterparts, making it challenging for even experienced foragers to distinguish between the two. This similarity can lead to accidental ingestion of toxic fungi, resulting in severe poisoning and, in some cases, death.

3. Delayed Symptoms: Another factor that contributes to the lethality of wild mushrooms is the delayed onset of symptoms. In many cases, individuals who have consumed toxic mushrooms may not experience any adverse effects until several hours or even days later. This delay can make it difficult to identify the cause of illness and seek prompt medical treatment, allowing toxins to wreak havoc on the body undetected.

4. Lack of Antidote: Unlike some other forms of poisoning, such as food poisoning or snake bites, there is often no antidote available for mushroom toxicity. Treatment for mushroom poisoning typically involves supportive care to manage symptoms and prevent complications, such as intravenous fluids and medications to support organ function. In severe cases, liver transplant may be necessary to prevent death from liver failure caused by mushroom toxins.

5. Vulnerable Populations: Certain populations are at greater risk of severe mushroom poisoning, including young children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems. Children may be more likely to ingest wild mushrooms out of curiosity, while older adults and immunocompromised individuals may be less able to tolerate the effects of mushroom toxins due to age or underlying health conditions.

Ms Patterson was arrested in early November and was charged over the deaths of her former in-laws Don and Gail Patterson, as well as Heather Wilkinson.

She's also been charged with attempted murder after Ian Wilkinson survived the alleged poisoning and alleged prior attempts to kill her estranged husband Simon Patterson four times.
